Reflections / Essays

Flames and Traces.

By Theodore GeorgedakisThe Growth Igniter15 min read

Some thoughts are born like sparks.

Some burn out immediately; others become fires that change your life.

The texts that follow are not answers.

They are questions, paths, challenges. They are the words that carve our traces along life's journey.

They are neither theories nor teachings. They are moments of reflection, cries of truth, and reminders of all we must not forget: freedom, love, creation, daring, truth, time slipping away, and the fire we must keep burning.

Flames and Traces — artistic cover of the collection of reflections.
1

The Human Being and Their Duty

A broken piece of concrete against a dark background.

A human being is born unrefined, like a rock that has not yet been sculpted.

Every action, every thought, every pain carves the grooves of their existence into them.

It does not matter whether you win or lose.

What matters is whether you dared.

Whether you looked fear in the eye and moved forward.

Your duty is not to yourself.

It is to the world.

Whatever you learned, whatever hurt, whatever you understood – give it.

Do not hoard it like a miser afraid of running out of wisdom.

Knowledge is not kept; it is shared.

And if they ask why you fight, why you persist, why you refuse to compromise, laugh.

Because those who ask will not understand.

You do not fight to be understood.

You fight because you know no other way to live.

Those who lived without struggle did not live.

They were shadows that wandered without leaving a trace.

If you want to be free, do not wait for freedom to be given to you.

Freedom is not bestowed.

It is earned.

Expect nothing.

Fear nothing.

Fight everything.

If even one phrase touches your thoughts, if even one word becomes a spark, then the journey was worthwhile.

Read. Reflect. Move forward.

2

Love and the Defeat of Death

Two silhouettes in a moment of intense intimacy — love as victory over death.

Love is the fire that burns everything you were so that everything you will become can be born.

Anyone who fell in love and remained unchanged did not fall in love.

Love is sacrilege and prayer at once.

It is the collapse of reason, the moment when a human being becomes something more than human.

The sated do not fall in love; the complacent do not fall in love.

Love demands hunger, emptiness, daring.

And when it passes? It does not pass.

It stays inside you, like a scar, like a song you heard as a child whose words you cannot remember, yet every time you hear it, you tremble.

Love is humanity's only victory over death.

Because when you fall in love, you are not afraid.

And when you are not afraid, you live.

3

Society and Human Loneliness

A solitary figure in the crowd — human loneliness within society.

People seek society, yet fear loneliness.

But society, as they have made it, is nothing more than a vast loneliness.

A loneliness filled with noise, false voices, masks.

If you want to belong, you must be alike.

If you want to stand out, you must learn to be alone.

But take care: loneliness is one thing, solitude another.

Loneliness is a prison. Solitude is a choice.

An authentic human being is not afraid to be alone.

Because in silence, they listen.

In emptiness, they find. In nothingness, they build everything.

Do not seek to fill your life with people.

Seek to fill your life with truth.

And then, the right people will come of their own accord.

Do not be afraid to be different. Fear only becoming like everyone else.

The world is not changed by the many.

It is changed by the few.

By those who dared to walk alone.

4

Truth and Its Weight

A portrait in harsh light and shadow — the weight of truth on a face.

Truth is heavy. Whoever bears it bends.

That is why most people fear it.

They prefer half-light, the almost right, the almost wrong. Because there they can hide.

But you were not born to hide.

If your truth hurts, it is because it is true.

If it frightens others, it is because they are asleep.

If it makes you feel alone, it is because you have not yet found your people.

Truth is not for everyone.

But if you find it, do not betray it.

If you feel it, do not stifle it. Keep it as your compass.

Even if it takes you far from everything you knew.

Even if it leaves you alone.

Truth is better than the warmth of a lie.

5

Fear and Submission

A child's silhouette facing a giant spider's shadow — fear that grows the longer you look at it.

Fear is the most insidious enemy. It makes you bow your head before anyone even asks you to.

It makes you small, invisible, harmless.

And then defeat comes of its own accord.

Do not submit to fear.

Submission is not safety. It is a prison.

Habit is not peace. It is paralysis.

If you are afraid, it means you have something to lose.

But think: which is worse? To lose something or to experience nothing?

Those who obey out of fear do not live.

Those who take no risks do not exist.

And remember:

Fear does not go away when you ignore it.

It goes away only when you look it straight in the eye and walk through it.

6

Creation and Destruction

A blurred portrait in white light — creation as revelation through the destruction of the old.

The hardest thing in the world is not to create.

It is not to destroy.

A human being is born with two forces within: one that builds and one that tears down. Both are needed.

But one must know when to use them.

Destroy only what holds you back.

False certainties, fears that keep you motionless, chains you wore for so many years and called “character.”

Create with your whole being.

Do not do something because others do it.

Do something that will make them stop and look at it.

Do not be an imitation.

Be a source.

Do not be afraid to create something new.

Only those who dare to create become immortal.

7

Life and Its Responsibility

A solitary silhouette before a vast, open landscape — the responsibility of living your own life.

Life owes you nothing.

It did not ask whether you wanted to be born, but now that you are here, you have a duty to live.

Not to survive.

Not to wait.

Not to settle into comfort.

If you do not fight for your life, someone else will decide for you. And then it will not be yours.

Life is not bestowed.

Breathing is not enough. You must demand, build, conquer.

Do not let your fears become your masters.

Do not wait for the right moment.

The moment is now.

And if you make a mistake, better that it be your own mistake than someone else's life.

Because the only true death is to live as a stranger in your own life.

8

Uniqueness and Its Value

A sheep stands upright in front of a flock.

The world wants to make you alike.

To think like everyone else.

To speak like everyone else.

To fear what everyone else fears.

But you were not born to be “everyone.”

You were born to be you.

If you lose your uniqueness, you become nothing.

If you always follow the crowd, you have no path.

Do not be ashamed to stand out.

Do not be afraid of people pointing at you.

Great people were always the “different” ones.

And those who laugh today will follow tomorrow.

Be light. Not a reflection.

9

Time and Its Waste

A hand holding a small hourglass with black sand.

Time waits for no one.

Not even you.

What you do not dare today, you may never dare.

What you leave for tomorrow may not wait for you.

The greatest waste is neither money nor strength.

It is the time you gave to the wrong things.

To the wrong people.

To the wrong fears.

To the wrong postponements.

Time is life.

Do not kill it.

Do not let it slip like water through your hands.

Build something. Leave something behind. Love something.

Because in the end, you will measure what you lived.

And the greatest punishment will be to look back and find nothing.

Live.

10

The Fire Within You

A vertical portrait of a figure in light — the fire burning within a human being.

Do not let your fire go out.

The world will try. With obligations, phobias, “reasonable” advice.

They will tell you to quiet down, rein yourself in, not ask for much.

They will teach you to settle for enough.

But you were not born to settle for enough.

The fire within you is not decorative.

It is the call of your existence to burn everything that keeps you stagnant.

To illuminate paths no one has dared to walk.

Keep it alive.

And if it goes out for a while, do not be frightened.

Blow hard within yourself, remember why you began, and light it again.

Because the world is not changed by those whose fire went out.

But by those who burned every fear and moved forward.

10+1

Zero point one.

A contemplative portrait in low light — the moment of a zero point one difference that changes everything.

The deeply devoted are the first to sense great changes, but this world has rarely listened to the devoted.

Art is a basic necessity, like food, like water.

Whoever asks for help, give them what you can, and give them a book too.

There is personal success, and there is collective success.
You enjoy the first alone.
You enjoy the second with others, and that multiplies the value of what you feel.

Undogmatic souls are generous because they spread joy and truth among many people.

There are worlds that sink and worlds that emerge, and this, let us say, is the fate of our world.
Of the past world and the future world.

People never leave.
The poetry we shared with them remains from what was grafted within us, and they live on in our passion.

Narcissistic self-centeredness (was) is the real epidemic.

Submission to fear, to any fear, deprives the individual of others and others of the individual.

Adaptability has become synonymous with acquiescence and passivity.
To adapt means to find another way.

When a habit becomes convenient, shatter it.

The brave who dare something new are always the few.

Know the value of defeat.
Understand the value of victory.

Every person is a unique book, not just another wallet.

Get to know great gentlemen and great rogues.

Do not think about victory or defeat.
Fight.

Experience is what you gain from every mistake you made.
Make mistakes. Listen to others' mistakes.
Look for the lesson.
Learn and move forward.

To dive into the universe of detail in something you love is your most precious journey.

Humanity's hell is society.
Humanity's paradise is “uniquommunity.”

Belong where you feel unambiguous and significant.

If society produced unique individuals instead of copies, it would be wonderful...
But it is not.

If that happened, no one would feel the need to judge, nor would anyone accept being judged.

A useful person is a unique person.

In society, difference is lost and the creativity that springs from it is stifled.
Society, then, means being the same.
Make sure you are not…

Adolescent romance is training for great love, and parents are life's first obstacles.

Love is a priori, that is, in advance, the ritual of the death of an old self and the springtime of a new one.
Like the earthquakes that shook the earth and gave birth to volcanoes, joined seas, raised mountains.
The dead who merely still breathe do not fall in love.

Love leads to ritual coexistence, to a momentary carnal, spiritual, physical, emotional marriage.
Apollonian and Dionysian at once.

Love is a moment in the present.
Love is the art of the present.
To go from being a craftsman of love to an artist of love is the most beautiful course of study in the world.
“Love is the breath of God.”

Love embraces all humanity and the entire universe.
A sacrifice in the present where everything becomes one.
It is then that earth and sky unite and become the universe.
I hope you experience it.

There are no males and females.
There are people who complement each other or clash. Both are good, as long as they connect them.

Desire is preparation for what you will do.
Whatever you desire, do it.
Otherwise, you are a liar and insult yourself.

Dreaming of something is one thing; having it as a goal is another.
One is imagination.
The other is reality.
Both are precious, but respect their meanings.
Vision is the final destination. Once you reach it, it is now a result.

Mission is the journey and the distance you will need to cover.
Your compass is consistency.

Beauty is one thing, loveliness another.
Their opposite, ugliness, is a harsh word. Set that word aside.

Not agreeing means you have your own position and accept, but do not adopt, the other person's position.
Disagreeing means absolutism and rejection.
Respect both meanings. Otherwise, you hurt people and they hurt you.

Choose a way or find your own way to give voice to what is inside you.
Paint, dance, sing, write, speak, compose melodies, swim, run, dig, break, as long as you say it.

Do not criticize your ability to express yourself.
It is yours. It is your uniqueness.
Just do it. That is how you will find peace.

Talent is a label others give you.
You know how much effort you put in.
They probably know how little they tried.

What is ours is what we loved, not what we acquired.
Remember that.

~I bear no responsibility for your emotional turmoil.~

The text above was the source of the 10 writings. It was written on 20.08.2022, a Saturday, in my place of origin, Chora Sfakion, on Iliggas beach.

Yes, I am clearly influenced by Nikos Kazantzakis, Chronis Missios, and Dimitris Liantinis.

Keep the fire

Read. Reflect. Move forward.

If even one phrase lit a spark, keep it burning.
